Brothers Garabed and Krikor Melkonian - successful tobacco farm owners by trade - caused Melkonian Educational Institute to be built in Nicosia Cyprus and it opened in 1926. Its primary purpose was to preserve Armenian heritage by preserving Armenian children orphaned by Turkish massacre of 1924 during the First World War.

It continued to nurture Armenian children of the Armenian Massacre after the First World War
